  11. Please save this message for future  reference, especially if you are not
  12. familiar with LISTSERV.  This might look like a waste  of disk space now,
  13. but in  6 months  you will be  glad you saved  this information  when you
  14. realize that  you cannot remember what  are the lists you  are subscribed
  15. to, or  what is the command  to leave the  list to avoid filling  up your
  16. mailbox while you are on vacations. In fact, you should create a new mail
  17. folder for subscription confirmation messages  like this one, and for the
  18. "welcome  messages"  from the  list  owners  that you  will  occasionally
  19. receive after subscribing to a new list.

  21. To send  a message to  all the people  currently subscribed to  the list,
  22. just send  mail to JEEVES-INTEREST@JAVASOFT.COM. This  is called "sending
  23. mail to the list", because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV
  24. makes  copies  for all  the  people  who  have subscribed.  This  address
  25. (JEEVES-INTEREST@JAVASOFT.COM)  is also  called the  "list address".  You
  26. must  never try  to send  any command  to that  address, as  it would  be
  27. distributed to all  the people who have subscribed. All  commands must be
  28. sent  to  the  "LISTSERV  address",  LISTSERV@JAVASOFT.COM.  It  is  very
  29. important to understand  the difference between the  two, but fortunately
  30. it is not complicated. The LISTSERV address is like a FAX number, and the
  31. list address  is like  a normal  phone line.  If you  make your  FAX call
  32. someone's  regular phone  number by  mistake,  it will  be an  unpleasant
  33. experience for  him but you will  probably be excused the  first time. If
  34. you do it regularly,  however, he will probably get upset  and send you a
  35. nasty complaint. It  is the same with mailing lists,  with the difference
  36. that you are calling hundreds or thousands of people at the same time, so
  37. a lot more people get annoyed if you use the wrong number.

  39. You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF JEEVES-INTEREST"
  40. command to LISTSERV@JAVASOFT.COM. You can also tell LISTSERV how you want
  41. it to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. If you do not
  42. trust the system, send a "SET JEEVES-INTEREST REPRO" command and LISTSERV
  43. will send you a  copy of your own messages, so that you  can see that the
  44. message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way. After a while
  45. you  may find  that this  is getting  annoying, especially  if your  mail
  46. program does not  tell you that the  message is from you  when it informs
  47. you that  new mail has arrived  from JEEVES-INTEREST. If you  send a "SET
  48. JEEVES-INTEREST  ACK NOREPRO"  command, LISTSERV  will mail  you a  short
  49. acknowledgement  instead,  which  will  look different  in  your  mailbox
  50. directory. With most mail programs you will know immediately that this is
  51. an  acknowledgement  you  can  read  later. Finally,  you  can  turn  off
  52. acknowledgements completely with "SET JEEVES-INTEREST NOACK NOREPRO".

  54. Please note that  it is presently possible for anybody  to determine that
  55. you are signed  up to the list  through the use of  the "REVIEW" command,
  56. which returns the e-mail address and  name of all the subscribers. If you
  57. do not  want your name to  be visible, just issue  a "SET JEEVES-INTEREST
  58. CONCEAL" command.
